I’m trying the Depaz VSOP 7 year Agricole from Martinique. Agricoles have been growing on me recently, especially after discovering some great Aussie cane juices. Well I have to say this is a rum quite unlike any other I’ve tasted. The bottle and glass aromas are pretty much like I’d expect from an Agricole rum. I let it sit for a while and it’s got that grassy oaky aroma that I’m used to from an Agricole but maybe there’s also a hint of pineapple. The taste is where it all changes though. It really does remind me of a single malt Scotch. Maybe more so than a rum!! There’s a certain initial sweetness which becomes drier with time. It’s not unpleasant but it’s like taking a sip of tea when you’re expecting coffee. It’s anything but smooth, which I don’t mind at all, and it makes the tongue and palette tingle in a pleasant way. There’s dried fruit, bitter almonds and that pineapple again and of course those earthy grassy notes.
I’m not sure to be honest. I like it in some ways but dislike it in other ways. Maybe because it’s just not what I expected. I’ll have to give it another go in a few months and see if my opinion changes. At this point though I’d probably give it 5 out of 10.
